Onboard a ship, bottles of liquid—bottles of water,
stove fuel, alcoholic beverages—can slip, slide, fall, spill,
or break open. This is one of several sling knots that
grip the necks of containers, glass bottle or otherwise,
allowing the container to be hung safely aside or carried
with greater ease. Asher’s bottle sling is credited to Dr.
Harry Asher and first appeared in print in A New System
of Knotting, Volume 2, published in 1989.
