condor and puma, as well as huge diversity in other wildlife (“Choquequirao” n.d.). At the high elevation, it is also
possible to see snowcapped peaks from the site itself – an image that captures the diversity of the landscape.
The site (currently) is divided into twelve sectors, spreads over six square kilometers, and holds many ceremonial
purposes. Current excavations continue to uncover more elements to the site that reveal its complexities. It is
divided into an upper and lower section (known as the hanan and hurin) and has great expanding agricultural
terraces.
a. SECTORS
i. Sector I
The highest area and located in the northern section of
the site, Sector I contains 5 structures as well as a
temple and plazas. This would consider it as part of the
“hanan” of the site as a whole, the upper and more
sacred area separated from the common peoples.
ii. Sector II
Sector II holds the main section where the qullqas “Llamas del Sol”: Hidden Inca Tours
(food depository structures) are located. There is also 16 ceremonial platforms that are linked to canal routes and
waterways.
iii. Sector III
The third sector links the hanan and hurin areas of the entire city. In this contains the main large plaza and a two-
story building. This area is believed to be one of the primary ceremonial locations.
iv. Sector IV
The fourth sector is an area within the hurin with a main ceremonial building, likely related to offerings to
ancestors.
