CHOQUEQUIRAO PERU’S NEXT MACHU PICCHU
INTRODUCTION
Every year, Peru’s famous Machu Picchu receives over one million visitors (“Things to See,” 2019). The number
has only continued to rise, especially since the 1990’s. Peru has scrambled to both reach the fullest benefits from
the attention and to protect one of the world’s most beloved sites. The image of the city backed by Huayna Picchu
and the endless rows of the Andes mountains has attracted millions of photos and poses as tourists flock to the
mountainous, lush and green landscape with perhaps one of the most impressive and preserved sites Incan remains
and culture – untouched by the Spanish conquistadors. More recently, and due to the urging of the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (known as UNESCO), Machu Picchu has only allowed up to
2,500 visitors a day to protect the area and with a time limit to each visitor, a limit that continues to be surpassed
despite the new regulation (“Drastic New Rules,” 2014).
