equal importance to PBIS as a whole, will be secondary to implementing the cycle. Below we will explain
how we will implement each part of the cycle at Virgen del Carmen.
*note: for our purposes, “reinforce” should
appear after
“monitor” in the PBIS cycle graphic to the
left. We added “reinforce” as its own
section specifically because the Virgen del
Carmen staff has little experience with
reinforcement.
Establish: For this portion of the cycle, we will be working with teachers and administration to set the
expectations of each classroom. In order to simplify things, we will create the expectations first (to model
what expectations would look like in a PBIS context) and then share them with the teachers for their input.
We also will keep it open to student input as well.
Teach: We will be explicitly teaching behaviors to students as part of the PBIS system, much like one would
teach academics. We will do the first lesson to model for the teachers, and we will communicate to the
teachers that other lessons on behavior would best be taught by them (since we are only there twice a week).
Prompt: Prompting students to exhibit positive behaviors before behaviors occur (i.e., prompting how to
behave in line before getting in line, prompting how to actively listen before teaching a lesson) will be a joint
effort between us and the classroom teachers. We anticipate that it will be mostly our responsibility in the
beginning weeks so that teachers are able to see the techniques and timing to adopt into their own practice
later on.
