Monitor: Much like prompting, monitoring student behavior during all times of the day (instructional time,
independent work time, transitions, etc.) will also be a joint effort between us and the classroom teachers.
Reinforce: Reinforcement systems for students (rewards for positive behaviors) will be established and
explained by us and maintained by both us and the classroom teachers. Reinforcements are expected to be
given to students who exhibit behaviors that are in line with or go beyond classroom expectations. Despite the
fact that some students will have an easier time following the expectations than others, both we and the
teachers will try and reinforce all students in some shape or form so they all feel as though they can succeed.
Evaluate: Evaluation, for the purposes of this pilot PBIS semester session, will be carried out by us in the
form of taking data three times throughout the semester. The first will be before the system is carried out (to
be used as a baseline). The second will be during the middle of PBIS implementation to monitor progress and
address any problems necessary. The final will be at the end of PBIS implementation to assess overall
progress. Data will concern the behavior of the students, tallying instances of problem behaviors and seeing
whether or not/how much those behaviors decline as a result of PBIS in Virgen del Carmen.
As we mentioned before, since we are only at Virgen del Carmen twice a week at maximum, it is
important that the classroom teachers come away from this semester with information on how to utilize the
system, particularly in terms of the above explained cycle and how it is used in a classroom context. Teachers’
PBIS competence is the only way that the students will realistically receive any benefits, for the teachers will
need to teach, prompt, monitor, and reinforce behaviors at all hours of every school day for students to truly
internalize how to behave positively. Because of this, we intend to have professional development meetings
with teachers to discuss and teach them the program as our implementation progresses. These meetings will
come as needed as we monitor PBIS implementation, but the first will definitely take place prior to initial
implementation to orient teachers to PBIS’ purpose.
Since we are all education majors back in the United States, this project will hopefully benefit
both the organization we are working with (Virgen del Carmen) and also our field of study overall. Ensuring
that student behavior is positive and productive is absolutely central to academic efficiency in the classroom -
