their cultural and natural sites. Once that is accomplished, they’re able to move forward in submitting
proposals for sites to be considered by UNESCO for World Heritage.
i. Tentative List
The tentative list requires that a country proposing the site must take an inventory of all cultural or natural
heritage within the countries area. A site will not be able to move forward unless included on the tentative list.
This list is at the utmost importance to the Freeman Houses and will be discussed later in this paper.
ii. The Nomination File
After a tentative list, the country or State Party selects those on the list to be nominated. The World Heritage
Center aids the preparation of the proposals, ensuring the documentation and maps of the site are in order.
iii. The Advisory Bodies
At a World Heritage Convention, ICOMOS, World Conservation Union (IUCN), and the International Centre
for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), evaluate the nominated
sites and organizes expert advice according to each site.
iv. The World Heritage Committee.
After a successful evaluation within the advisory bodies, the site will move forward into the
intergovernmental World Heritage Committee to make a decision concerning an addition to the list. At this
point it may refer back to the state that proposed the site to request additional resources or information about
the site.
v. THE CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
The final and most important determination for the site is simply the matched criteria put forth by UNESCO.
If the site reaches one or multiple of these criteria and has successfully passed all previous stages, it will be
