been explored in this proposal. What remains to be completed for the future of the site is additional detailed
historical research, documentations and maps of the site itself.
It is important to also note that for the U.S. Department of the Interior will only consider sites
to be proposed which are already landmarks recognized as significant with the inclusion on the
registry of the National Park Service. The Freeman Houses are already on this registry, and a
document with photos taken from 1994 as well as description of the site are available on NPR’s
website (“National Register,” 1999).
ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT AND FUNDING
There are many current organizations that have turned their attention to the Mary and Eliza
Freeman Houses. With the threat of demolition to the site in 2009, there was a jumpstarted effort
and attention to the houses which influenced the transfer of ownership to the non-profit
organization “The Mary and Eliza
