There is a misunderstanding and a lack of knowledge surrounding the use of these traditional

        medicines. While in the United States, LSD and other hallucinogenics are usually consumed recreationally,

        that does not mean that it is not extremely useful and integral medicine in other places.

        CONCLUSION

               While traditional and modern medicine are being utilized to treat mental illness in both Peru and the

        United States, it does not mean that they are equal or necessarily comparable. The United States is

        experiencing a resurgence of natural and alternative medicine, but it is not necessarily informed by science;

        rather it is informed by large companies aiming for profits. The indigenous populations of Peru and the other

        citizens of the country are experiencing a decline in traditional medicine and shamanism. Both cultures are

        facing different challenges and illnesses, and using the resources they have to do something about it.

        Alternative and traditional medicine are useful and invaluable in different parts of the world with different

        access to modern healthcare. While individuals should not take the scientific advances of modern medicine for

        granted, there are plenty of things to relearn from those who continue to practice traditional medicine.
