It’s only tting to begin OmniSite’s product timeline with cellular radios. Navigating the early days of cellular radios used for machine-to-machine (M2M) control
was like maneuvering through a technological mine eld. Brands or models of early analog cellular radios
would have a life of six months to two years before being replaced by another model, or being altogether discontinued. This created the constant need for product redesigns and troubleshooting, because
the radios connected and programmed di erently.
1. This is the rst analog cellular radio we used.
It was created by Standard Communications, a rm that later changed the name of their M2M radio division to Skybility. This analog radio functioned solely on the Aeris.net MicroBurst control channel network. It provided wireless communication for our rst XR50 product.
2. We had just started selling our rst XR50 products with the Skybility CMM8700, and with short notice, Skybility announced we needed to change to this CMM8900 instead.
It programmed substantially similar to the CMM8700. After the quick retirement of the 8700, we decided to socket the 8900 on a radio carrier board. The radio carrier board then connected to our XR50 and Crystal Ball motherboards. The purpose of this was to eliminate a motherboard redesign if the radio were to change again. At the time, we didn’t realize how valuable the concept of the radio carrier board would become. Once we gured that out, we made many radio carrier boards to accommodate the constantly changing radio designs.
3. Just when we began shipping the Skybility CMM8900, Skybility informed us that the 8900 would be discontinued and we would need to change to the 8920, which was a smaller, lower-power analog radio.
