The tourism sector Banyuwangi Regency has grown rapidly in the last ten years. This

transformation has many impacts to the indigenous people whom the identity brought as the

icon of Banyuwangi’s tourism development, Osing people. The employed conditions of women

in fact marks women's engagement in profoundly, positively and provides many opportunities

for women as an active actor. The aim of this study, firstly is to expose what kind of
accomplishments women expanded in the development of Banyuwangi tourism by their

engagement into tourism and its expansion. Secondly, to explore the impact of tourism

development to indigenous people like Osing people, does it convey social inclusion? Or in

opposite direction bring them to be marginalized. The method of case study, which could

explain social processes within its development is used. In this research, 19 informants were
interviewed. The informants were selected among tourism entrepreneur like artist, home stay

owner, tour guides and managers of Kelompok Sadar Wisata; as well as those who do not

participate in the tourism workers, but are residents of touristic destinations. The questions are

organized in accordance with informants such as opportunity access to involved in tourism

entrepreneur, the working conditions of women, the economic structure of Osing people, the
social status of women in daily life and their status at work and in tourism sector in the present

days. As a result of the research, it has been concluded that tourism has transformed the

traditions in the Osing people and the women, who began to work in agriculture, gained

strength in both economic, social and individual by involving the business and utilizing the

opportunities that tourism enterprises has offered. Social transformations occur in the regions

that are opened to tourism. The society experiences an important transformation in terms of
both economy and tradition in their livelihoods.
