The Indonesian Ministry of Finance recently released data about the significance of the role of
women in the economy along with the economic growth achieved by Indonesia in the last
two decades. There have been many studies and other data that corroborate the fact about
women contribution to the economy. However, there have only been few researches that look
at the case from the opposite angle and investigate whether economic growth has supported
the achievement of gender equality especially in the field of women empowerment. This aims
to examine how gender perspectives have been used to identify challenges and options for
the participation of women in the labor market, how gender collective actions have
contributed to increasing women’s participation in the labor market, and how existing policy
can reduce the challenges faced by women in entering the labor market. All three aims will be
pursued through qualitative methods by examine theoretical approach and reviews some
empirical literature on gender and the labor market. The research result shows that economic
growth could reduce obstacles to gender equality in the labor market if it is supported by
collective actions, education and skill enhancement as well as the introduction of supportive
policies.
