Survival Strategies of People with Disabilities During
Pandemic Covid-19 in Yogyakarta

People with disabilities are vulnerable groups who mostly impacted by Covid-19 pandemic
that has been ravaging since early 2020. When a person with disabilities is infected by Covid-19
they need distinctive treatment and facilities which are accessible and suitable for their
condition. At this moment, the existing Covid-19 treatment and facility mostly not adjusted to
the needs of people with disabilities. For some person with disabilities this conditions could
bring fatal consequences. Some of the impacts of the pandemic on persons with disabilities
are the loss of livelihoods. In this condition, persons with disabilities tend to become a burden
for their families and the surrounding environment. For women with disabilities, the impact of
this pandemic is doubled. Losing their jobs makes them lose their bargaining position in the
family and has caused the increasing domestic violence to women with disabilities. The
purpose of this research is to find out how people with disabilities survive during Covid-19
pandemic. How people with disabilities adapt and sustain their livelihood. This research uses
the subsistence ethic theory to explore the problem of people with disabilities related to their
livelihood during pandemic with the disability and gender perspective. This research uses the
qualitative exploratory method.
