Skills shortages are affecting almost half of the industries in the
automotive sector, limiting business investment, employment,
planning and growth. Current shortages and future government
policy impacting the automotive workforce must be addressed
through a comprehensive government and industry partnership.
SPECIFIC INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT
A future Australian Government must recognise the importance of
industry specific programs, processes and mechanisms rather than
just a reliance on whole of economy approaches to job creation
and better future planning for emerging professions and skills.
There is room for both whole-of-economy and industry specific
initiatives. With whole-of-economy government job creation
initiatives, there must be flexibility for specific industry allocations,
engagement and delivery with industry associations, particularly if
a future government intends to change the national fleet with
policies to encourage the take up of alternative propulsion
systems.
The Industry and Government must partner to better promote the
value of automotive apprenticeships to employers, job seekers,
parents and students. The automotive industry argues that raising
the profile of automotive apprenticeships has flow on benefits to
improved commencement and completion rates for automotive
apprentices.
