E LA LA LA…
BENNY
Good. Now. All of ya. With the music. (To pianist) Can ya give me a stride four-four feel? Like… here.
N
Benny plays. [Piano- stride intro vamp]
BENNY
Just like that. From the chorus. (As pianist hesitates) I‘ll take full responsibility. Ready? (Counting)
Two, three, four… [Piano- modified stride intro vamp] (Piano attempts stride rhythm, but it
quickly deteriorates into a relatively simple, modern repetitive vamp, more 60‘s than 30‘s.) [Piano-
repetitive rhythm vamp] Hold it![Piano stops] I need Fats Waller here. You‘re givin‘ me Marvin
Hamlisch. (As Marty stares puzzled) All right. Least it's up. Go. Two, three, four…
SONG: CRACKLE-E (Reprise)
(As the staged jingle unfolds, Benny conducts and directs using a lyric sheet, referring to it
occasionally for cues. There are now effective harmonies, and the staging is more centered on
Benny, and highly theatrical. Although it is overdone, sassy, cheesy, and tongue-in-cheek, one might
argue, as Benny will, that musically it‘s a superior piece.)
[Writer’s note: Benny should actively direct the rehearsal, interjecting occasional (ad-lib)
prompts and responses.]
