FOR THE LEGAL PROFESSION
OVER 40 YEARS SERVICING THE
LEGAL PROFESSION
The College of Law was founded in 1974 by The Law Society of New South Wales. It was established by the
legal profession to develop and provide an innovative six-month, full-time Practical Legal Training (PLT)
course to prepare law graduates for practice. This replaced the Articles of Clerkship system, which until
then had been the pathway to admission as a solicitor in NSW.
The College of Law Limited is a company limited by the guarantee of its 31 Members and is a not-for-
profit company regulated by the Australian Charities and Not For Profit Commission (ACNC). It receives no
funding from government.
In place of shareholders, the College has 31 Members who are drawn from the College’s key stakeholder
groups across Australia and New Zealand. Stakeholders include alumni and legal professional communities
in both countries.
