The four kinds of context clues that are quite common are as follows:
• Synonym clue
A synonym, or a word with the same meaning, is used in the sentence.
Example: She hums continuously, or all the time, and it annoys me.
• Antonym clue
A word or a group of words that has the opposite meaning reveals the meaning of an
unknown term.
Example: Marty is gregarious, unlike his quiet and shy brother.
• Explanation clue
The unknown word is explained either within the sentence or in a sentence that
immediately precedes it.
Example: The team was elated when they won the trophy.
• Example clue
Specific examples are used to define the term.
Example: Celestial bodies, such as the Sun, Moon, and stars, are governed by
predictable laws.
