  From experience, when employing new key managers, give a firm specification/scope of what your expectations (outside job descriptions) are before commencing; what things to work on that are urgent in the business, and time frames. Get sign off. This will need to be discussed in the employment process.
Often with new employees there is a honeymoon period for you, as you are as excited as they are in view of new blood and energy. But control it. Hold it back a bit. After a bedding in time when you feel they are confident and you are ready and agree to things, start working on some of the warm and fuzzy things they will want to get into. Watch them carefully, as they can do a lot of damage and waste time and money. Going back to the first sentence of this chapter – everyone is a marketing expert.
