 standardising processes saves the company money, improves performance, retains people, develops consistency, and in the case of the in-home selling systems, makes the company more sales.
Michael Gerber said in his book, ‘Once you put your systems in place, don’t stop there... it must be continuous improvement.’ In my experience, few have the discipline of continuously updating systems. When you think about how many things in a business are about systems, it’s amazing how often they are not documented. Once systems are in place, you must continuously update them. It does take work but it is about creating habits.
And the systems must be simple (see Part 2: Chapter 2).
I was supplying products to a reseller. I used to get phone calls every day with queries on this and that. It was frustrating the hell out of me and burning my time. In the end, I wrote up a simple one-page system on handling enquiries – a table with two columns: query and answer.
