Cut 17 more pieces of polypropylene, this time making them each 12 inches
(300 mm) long. Tie them onto the core in another layer, as shown below. If you
couldn’t find black or brown polypropylene and bought brightly colored rope
instead, you might want to parcel on a layer of manila fibers here (just a dusting
of unlaid strands) to keep the color of your polypropylene from showing through
the finished pudding.
At this stage of the game, you may want to consider an eye centered in the
middle of the fender, protruding from the top of it. It is not critical on a fender of
this size, but it’s very handy on larger ones.
To make a centered eye, you’ll need a 4-inch (100 mm) grommet. Unlay a
single strand from the 5-foot (1.5 m) piece of ¼-inch (6 mm) manila. Middle the
strand, form a 4-inch (100 mm) circle, and tie an overhand knot. Lay up the
rope, and then tuck the ends as you would for a long splice. Put a seizing on the
grommet to match those on the other two eyes. Slip the grommet onto the fender
and position it squarely in the center.
