Although the exact origin of the Lapp knot is not known, it
was first documented as being used in 1892. It can be used as
an alternative to a bowline and works well as an improvised
safety line or tether.
The advantage of the Lapp knot is, if it is tied with a draw-
loop, it becomes a quick-release knot. Unlike many other
knots, the Lapp knot will fall apart with just one tug on the BowlInes and Bends
working end. This knot is also perfect for use as a curtain tie-
back as it can be tied just as well with a short length of rope
as a longer one.

Bring the working end
upwards across itself
and through the loop
you made in Step 1.
4
Start to tighten the
knot and arrange it so
that the working end is
trapped inside the loop.
