The simple simon knot was introduced by the late Harry
Asher and first appeared in his book A New System of Knotting.
This knot is a variation on the reef knot (see pages 30–31), but
is tied in a totally different way by forming a bight in one rope
and then threading the other rope through and around it to
                form the finished knot.
The advantage of this knot is that it is more secure than
the reef knot and does not become loose or unravel if it’s BowlInes and Bends
subjected to frequent jerking movements. It also holds well if
it is tied using differently sized ropes, and even with synthetic
ropes that tend to have less grip.

                                         Now lead the rope up
                                         and around both legs of
                                         the bight and diagonally
                                         over itself, as shown
                                         here.
               4
                                         Tuck the rope down
                                         and up through the
                                         bight next to its own
                                         standing part.

               5
                                         Tighten to complete
                                         the knot.
