The sailor’s gripping hitch is a knot that allows a lengthwise
pull on a smooth spar, rope, pole, boom etc. It is very easy
to tie and will even handle tapered objects such as a marlin
spike, as long as the pull is in the direction of the taper.
This hitch works best if the pull is steady and constant,
but if you want to increase the grip you can place a small
piece of rubber beneath the knot. It can also be used to tie crossIng Knots
one rope to another, even if they are of different thicknesses.

                                         behind the pole and tuck
                                         it up through the back.

                                         Tighten by pulling on
                                         the standing part. When
                                         pulled to the left this
                                         hitch will hold firm.
