American Medical Association (AMA) founded by a national convention at Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, PA; instigated by Nathan Smith Davis’ 1845 resolution to the
NY Medical Association, with mission of securing the privileged position of the Regular medical profession. The exclusionary consultation clause was part of the Code of Ethics adopted by the AMA at its founding in 1847; it begins to be aggressively applied around 1855.

Constantine Hering, MD, Jacob Jeanes, MD, and Walter Williamson, MD, obtain charter for the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, PA; remained throughout the century the center of homeopathic learning in the US and the world.
Eclectic Medical College of Indiana founded in Louisville, KY; closure date unknown.
New England Botanico-Medical College founded in Worchester, MA. 1852, renamed Worchester Medical College. 1857, moved to Boston, MA. 1858, moved to Worcester, MA. Closed 1859.
Randolph Eclectic Medical Institute founded
in Rochester, NY. 1849, merged with Eclectic Medical Institute of New York and moved
to Syracuse, NY, to become the Central Medical College of New York.

Carl Schultz, MD, ND (d. 1935) Known as “The Father of Naturopathy in California”. Founded the Naturopathic Institute and Sanitarium of California and the California University of Liberal Physicians. Largely responsible for the original licensure of naturopaths in CA, the first state to achieve such a status. ••

Medical School of Fredonia. 1848, moved to Rochester, NY, to become Eclectic Medical Institute of New York. 1849, merged with Randolph Eclectic Medical Institute and moved to Syracuse, NY, to become the Central Medical College of New York.
LEGISLATION AND PUBLIC POLICY
Harriet Hunt (1805-1875), first woman to apply to Harvard Medical School. Rejected twice. Received Honorary MD in 1853 from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania.
