After two decades of attending Gay Pride Parades and Festivals, you would think that my enthusiasm for Pride season would have lessened. However, as an adult gay man, I continue attending Prides to people-watch, husband-hunt, and dance. But the present allure of the events is based more on gay politics and human equality.
At LA Pride 2012, I stopped at a booth to praise Tom Adler, the owner of The Essential Gay and Lesbian Directory. I told him about my experience when I used his directory to find my gay-friendly auto mechanic. We exchanged numbers and Tom asked me if I would be interested in working for the directory. Because of my personal success story with the mechanic, I was confident that the product works and knew that I would be comfortable selling it.
Almost five years later, I am so thankful that my path crossed with Tom's. I love directing traffic to companies that are gay-friendly. It is the simplest way to make political change. I will never have the ability to alter the warped mind of ignorance. But I do have the power to spend my dollar on Rainbow- friendly businesses.
