Chapter 12 – Introduction to Word Processing
Applications
What is Word Processing Application?
Word Processing Application is software used to create word based documents.
They are used to produce letters, reports, memos and any word-based document
on the computer that can be printed out onto paper using a printer. Word
Processing Applications are simply called Word Processors.
Examples of Word Processors
Notepad
WordPad
Microsoft Office (MS-Word)
Notepad and WordPad are integrated features of all versions of Windows OS.
They are features found in Windows Accessories. So, you do not have to install
Notepad or WordPad after installing any Windows OS.
Microsoft Word is a word processing program that allows for the creation of
both simple and sophisticated documents. The program is equipped with
templates and wizards to help you create useful documents such as resumes,
letters and fax cover sheets. There are also features that allow you to add
professional looking graphics to your documents. Other Word Processing
Applications are Word Perfect, Office Suite, AbiWord, Polaris, OpenOffice, etc.
With the exception of WordPad and Notepad, all other examples of word
processors including MS-Word are application software that must be installed on
the computer after installing any Windows OS.
MS-Word can't be installed separately. It is part of Microsoft Office Suite
software which contains other applications such as MS-Excel, MS-Power Point,
etc. Microsoft Office suite software is in many versions. Some of the versions
are Microsoft Office XP, Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office 2007,
Microsoft Office 2010, etc.
