Meet Your Neighbor By Marlene Markowitz Ann and Stan Lyman
Ann’s red hair has been her crowning glory. In her childhood, it caught the attention of many a movie producer.
Ann was born in Los Angeles, California. At five years old, she became an extra in movies. She appeared with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Danny Thomas, and Tyrone Power. She went on to graduate from Fairfax High School. By the time she was twenty-two, she had three daughters. Her fourth daughter was born six years later.
Ann played competitive women’s league tennis, playing with the same partner for seventeen years. While she played tennis, she also worked for Welcome West, where she represented local merchants and gave gifts to new residents in Thousand Oaks, California.
Moving to Lake Norman, North Carolina, Ann continued to play tennis. In 2000, she became a Realtor, selling in North and South Carolina. She was named Rookie of the Year, selling at least four million dollars of business in her first year. Being single, she went on the Internet, and met Stan Lyman online. They started communicating. Since Stan lived in Hilton Head and Ann in Charlotte, they met at the restaurant Fatz and immediately liked each other.
Stan, born in Revere, Massachusetts, graduated from Revere High School. He immediately entered the Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He was a member of George Patton’s “Hell on Wheels!” second division. The war ended before Stan saw any action.
Stan worked for Eastern Airlines in communications. Eddie Rickenbacker, the World War I ace, was president and owner of Eastern Airlines at the time. Stan and Eddie shared the same birth date. Stan became an air traffic controller, which took him
to Alaska for two years. When he returned to the States, he became the executive vice president of the National Association for Government Employees, a labor organization representing air traffic controllers
and other federal and state employees. He also did mediation and arbitration for the same labor organization, retiring in
1983. Stan first moved
to Florida, and then to
Hilton Head, South
Carolina, to enroll his
granddaughter in a private
school for exceptionally
bright children.

Stan, who had been
widowed for six years,
went on-line and communicated with Ann, meeting her at a restaurant. Enjoying each other’s company, they concluded that they should get married “since they were old!” They were married with family and friends traveling in from California and Boston.
When Sun City Carolina Lakes first opened, Ann was Number 10 on the list to buy a home, and they moved into their home in July 2006. She has a real estate office in her home and has sold many homes here in SCCL. Stan is a property manager for rentals here and has his own business called Doing It Right. Ann plays Mah-Jongg and Rummikub with groups of friends. She attends Cooking Fingers. She has hosted Friday Bingo at The Lake House with Century 21 First Choice, and is active in Chapter
5 of the Red Hats. The Lymans play poker here at least four nights a week and attend many shows and productions in SCCL.
They travel to Los Angeles and Las Vegas once a year to meet with family and friends. In the past, they owned a condominium on the Big Island of Hawaii with others, and they spent a month there each year for five or six years before they sold it.
Between Ann and Stan, there are seven children, sixteen grandchildren, and seventeen great- grandchildren with number eighteen on the way. They are looking forward to many more years of happiness here. L
Ann and Stan
