 To Our Readers...
Happy Fourth of July, or Independence Day as it is more properly called. How will you celebrate independence? What will you remember about its significance to Americans? Will it be historical events of long ago or some in which you yourself have participated? Will it be the picnics, parties, or the pomp of a full-fledged parade with a fireworks conclusion?
You might also ponder some of the art forms we enjoy in this the 242nd year of independence. Perhaps you recall a favorite movie, stage play, or a song, one patriotic or not. Maybe even something you've read.
With these thoughts in mind, the writers and editors of Living magazine would suggest that reading several of the articles for this month might be a good exercise in expanding your reasons for observing Independence Day. You might start with a reading of “Emancipation Oak” (p. 26) a celebration of the independence offered by education. Then, on page 28, go in a different direction as you learn about the man, his music, and the instrument synonymous with fireworks and the Fourth of July.
Many Americans swell with pride over the accomplishments of this free nation. Reminisce with us then over the success of the NASA space program (p. 38) as it celebrates its sixtieth birthday. Top it all off with the classic American frozen treat enjoyed by many on the Fourth and throughout our Independence month: "Ice Cream in July "(p. 74).
Along the way, check out what your community, neighbors, clubs, and groups have been up to lately and have planned in the month of July. In our "old fashion" Living@SCCL way, we can celebrate our independence every day.
