A look at happenings around SCCL in words and pictures
SCCL Super 70s Host the ILHS Girls in a Charity Softball Game
In the middle of a rain-filled week, the sun came out and the rain held off, and a fundraiser game between SCCL and Indian Land High School was played.
The Softball Club volunteers were out early to get the field in shape, set up the grill, and prepare for the game. Club members volunteered their time in many ways, whether as players, umpires, cooks, grounds crew, or announcer.
The game was announced by “the voice of Sun City softball,” Ron Sauer from his new home at Water’s Edge Park: The “Bull” Pen. Just the name of the announcer’s stand, no reflection on his ability to call the game.
The Memorial Day speaker, resident Ann Spitzer, recounted the story behind the poem, "In Flanders Field" by Lt. Colonel John McCrae. McCrae, a poet and physician from Ontario, Canada, had just buried a good friend as he recounted in his words. This poem from WWI is a popular memorization piece in Canada.
The SCCL Super 70s jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but in the end the youth of ILHS were just too much, and the girls came away with another victory. They were winners in many ways. Not only did they win the game, they also won by raising almost $2,000 to help support their program.
Approximately 420 fans, friends, and family attended the event. The club collected donations from the crowd and our sponsor, Team Pogue, while the Softball Club donated the grill profits from the evening. A fun time was had by all, as we supported the ILHS Booster Club.
The Softball Club would like to thank all the unnamed volunteers whose efforts made this event a great success.
