Stickball at SCCL
Selecting teams for play Stickball batting The stickball field
You may not know that one of the newer SCCL clubs is the SC Isotopes Stickball Interest Group, started by New Yorker “Cousin” Vinny Orsini in 2017. They play every Friday at 10 a.m. at the softball field, weather permitting, except during the winter months. Currently there are about 30 members.
If you are looking for a low-impact activity, you may want to check out Stickball. Stickball is a street game played in northeast urban cities. Stickball is similar to softball, except you use a stick, like a broomstick, for
a bat, and you toss up the ball yourself to hit it. The rubber ball is about the size of a tennis ball but without
the fur. Where the ball lands determines which base you walk to, no running required. There are simple rules for outs and fouls. No gloves needed, although some wear a workout type of glove. Teams are chosen at the time of play. The game has five innings and lasts about an hour. They will teach you how to play the game and hit the ball with a stick.
If you are interested in trying out Stickball, contact Vinny Orsini by email at themayor217@yahoo.com.
