ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Since 2016, I have been volunteering with Lucy and Company, which is a dance program for teens and young adults with special needs. I help my student (a fourteen year old girl with autism) learn the dances and shadow her during productions twice a year.
I have also volunteered with the Morton Museum, planning and leading story times (including writing and illustrating some of my own stories, making felt board characters, and designing a craft project for the kids to make) and assisting with elementary and middle school educational events.
I have served the Memphis Scottish Society Inc. (MSSI) in a number of ways such as playing guitar and bagpipes for events and meetings, designing and sewing Celtic doll clothes to sell in their fund raising auction, and writing articles for the MSSI newsletter. In 2017, I received MSSI’s Order of the Thistle award for “Outstanding Service.” I was the youngest individual to ever receive this honor.
I have played my bagpipes in the Wolf River Pipes and Drums and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Ceremonial Guard Pipes and Drums. With these bands I played for a variety of events, including several memorials for local fallen heroes and Sherriff’s office graduations.
I currently serve as the Pipe Sergeant of The Phoenix Pipe Band. My job is to listen for and correct mistakes and to lead the band in the Pipe Sergeant’s absence. I am also the youngest member of the band by about thirty years.
At my first bagpipe competition, I was named “Junior Grade IV Piper of the Day” (a title I earned again the next year). My first time competing in Senior (Adult) Grade IV, I won a total of three first places and two second places in various divisions; as well as two AGL’s (Above Grade Level).
I have been taking Tae-kwon-do through Shiloh Martial Arts Association since I was nine. I have earned my brown belt and become a member of the Evangelical Team and Instructor’s Committee. As a member of the Evangelical Team, I am available to answer any questions that students might have about the Bible and Salvation. As an Instructor, I assist in teaching the class, often by giving one-on-one instruction (as well as helping to teach my little sister her belt requirements at home). I am certified to start my own Shiloh Marital Arts affiliated school while in college (or afterwards). I also received the honor of being named “Shiloh Martial Arts Association 2017 Student of the Year,” which is a title given each year to one student who has shown exceptionality in service and faith both in and out of class.
During the 2016-2017 school year, I served as the Vice-president of my 4-H group.
I have a 4.0 GPA and scored a 34 on the ACT (the first standardized test I ever took) with perfect scores in English and Reading. I have always been an avid learner, and love to learn from sources beyond text books such as educational magazine articles. My parents say that my love of learning and self-motivation has made their job as home schooling parents easy.
Based how I interacted with my siblings and other young kids, I was offered a job that I didn’t even apply for at Germantown Preforming Arts Center as an assistant ballet teacher. I started with one class a week at the beginning of 2017, and now help teach three classes a week; I also plan to assist for several of their summer camps this upcoming summer. I carry out a variety of jobs in this position (everything from sweeping the studio floor to playing music while the students dance). My main job is to maintain order in the class and help the students learn their moves properly. Teaching toddlers to dance ballet is not always easy, but having a six year old sister and a brother who is almost four has given me lots of experience with young kids (being home schooled, I help my mother care for and teach them throughout the day).
