The "Rules" at HLA
.... freedom isn't the absence of boundaries; it's the ability to operate successfully and happily within boundaries.
HLA generally adheres to a casual dress code. There will be instances where business casual will be expected and time when there will be allowances for “work” clothes when staff may be working outside or doing cleaning or building maintenance.
Please be respectful of other staff and consider modesty, as well as inappropriate graphics or content. Use good
judgment.
HLA is always growing and our desire is that staff also continually grow. Growth and leadership can happen without title or position. Consider this often used quote: Dress for the job you want and not the job you have.
HLA is not liable for lost, misplaced, or stolen personal property. Please take all precautions to safeguard your personal items. Parking is at an employee’s own risk. It is recommended that staff lock their vehicle and do not leave vehicles overnight. Employees are not to park in areas reserved for visitors.
Smoking is not permitted in or on HLA property or in work/company vehicles. Staff or staff families wishing to smoke should do so off company premises.
HLA is a Drug Free workplace and reserves the right to test any employee at any time for the use of illegal drugs or alcohol during work hours or work-related events.
No one "likes" rules but alas there has to be certain expectations within an organization. HLA breaks all the typical rules for a business and would be quickly kicked out of corporate America, and we are OK with that!
These guidelines are provided for informational purposes only and are not intended to be all-inclusive. We expect that working within a Christian ministry organization would make certain expectations obvious. Using discernment and discretion in regard to moral conduct should guide your actions and how you represent HLA among staff and the community.
HLA is unapologetically Christian and while we don't require a statement of faith from our families or staff, we expect that HLA business decisions should be based on those principles. The policies outlined in this handbook do not infringe upon the CULTURE or accepted behaviors that are in place and have been previously approved.
Our primary guideline here is to...
There shall be no disclosure of any confidential information, personal family situations, or trade secrets to anyone outside of HLA without the appropriate authorization. It is the employee’s duty and responsibility
to safeguard all confidential information.
When inquiry is made regarding a current or former employee or HLA family, the inquiry must be forwarded to the appropriate party without comment. Use good judgment and discretion in regard to protecting family, staff and HLA information.
Due to the Freedom and Flexibility that HLA provides to its staff, it is the responsibility of each employee of HLA to immediately report any and all irregularities or concerns indicating actual or suspected abuse of hours, conflicts of interest, violations of confidentiality, fraud or other similar suspicious persons or activities.
HLA requires all staff to present a professional image to the public and families. Appearance should be neat and clean. Staff should consider their level of family or public contact and the types of meetings they are scheduled to attend in determining what is appropriate.
A conflict of interest occurs when an employee uses their affiliation with HLA to advertise or promote items or services for personal gain.
As a general rule, HLA staff should not exclusively promote or recommend on a regular basis any one particular service or curriculum. Each family is unique and should allow for options and flexibility.
HLA staff should not accept gifts in exchange for HLA services or provide HLA services free to families that are not enrolled with HomeLife Academy without prior authorization. This does not include guidance counseling or services that are normally provided and are a ministry or extended service to all homeschoolers whether they are registered with HLA or not.
HLA staff may engage in outside employment and activities as well as personal educational activities during non-working provided that such activity does not interfere with their job performance or constitute a conflict of interest.
If an employee is unsure of whether something constitutes a conflict of interest, please contact and discuss with Leadership.
