SEAI Energy Team of The Year Finalists
This year DePuy Synthes along with our colleagues in Janssen and Vison Care were short listed for the prestigious Energy Team of the Year award. While we were unsuccessful, being shortlisted from 124 applicants was recognition of the great work being done in Energy Management across the site and Campus Ireland.
New Purchase of Renewable Electricity
In line with our targets to procure 100% of our electricity from renewable sources we have commenced an 8-year direct Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This will see 2 wind farms in Cork and Clare supply us with renewable electricity helping us to move our operations towards 100% carbon neutrality.
We are first manufacturing organisation in Ireland, and the only member of the Large Industry Energy Network (LIEN) programme with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), to have implemented this renewable energy solution. The PPA has enabled us to achieve several key energy management goals.
• A >70% reduction in CO2 emissions across our operations, during a period of overall increases by industry in Ireland.
• Securing carbon neutral electrical energy use for J&J Ireland, making the multi-site family unique in the Irish manufacturing landscape in 2020
Key Environmental Benefits:
Over the 8-year lifetime of this agreement, the two windfarms will produce enough electricity to power 264,400 homes. This agreement will also enable those wind farms to be upgraded and provide additional renewable capacity to the Irish electrical grid. The environmental benefit of this will see carbon dioxide emissions reduced to the equivalent of:
In 2021 we will continue to drive energy efficiency across the site, with a particular focus on reducing the sites gas usage and associated CO2. Other projects and initiatives are:
• Roll out our asset optimisation platform to improve the energy performance of our utilities.
• Complete a Chilled Water Optimisation project in B2.
• Review additional onsite renewable generation.
• Install heat pumps to capture and reuse waste heat.
• We also plan to work with the local community to install
Solar panels on schools.
