On Nov. 21, 2020, at 10:35 p.m., 22nd District tactical officers responded to a person with a gun call at Fernwood Park, located at 10436 S. Wallace St. The officers received information from an OEMC dispatch that three males armed with guns were inside a red Nissan.
Upon approach to the call, the officers observed a red Nissan parked and unoccupied. As the officers conduct- ed their investigation of the vehicle, three offenders approached from Fernwood Park and, upon observing the officers, fled on foot back into the park.
The officers observed the three suspects and followed them into the park, at which time all three offenders turned and fired at the officers. The officers took cover from the barrage of gunfire as the offenders fled eastbound from the park. The heroic officers did not return fire at the offenders due to occupied residences in the area.
The officers called a 10-1 while pursuing their armed assailants and provided information to responding units. A perimeter was es- tablished around 104th and Wallace with units from 022 and sur- rounding districts as well as K-9 support units. The officers main- tained the perimeter and a systematic search was conducted.
The responding units were able to locate two of the three offend- ers and placed them into custody after they were positively identi- fied. Both offenders were in possession of handguns with extend- ed magazines and fully automatic capabilities. More than 25 shell casings from three different guns were located at the scene. The offenders were charged with attempted murder of a police officer.
It is with great honor that FOP Chicago Lodge 7 presents these officers with the Distinguished Service Award.
