Three tactical officers from the 25th District jumped into action in late December to save a man’s life.
Officers Cyrus Martinez, Jason Cloherty and Tom Sikor- ski were headed back to the station around 12:45 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2016, when they spotted a man in apparent dis- tress in the 3800 block of West North Avenue in the Hum- boldt Park neighborhood.
At a press conference, Martinez recalled the trio “saw the man lying in the middle of the street with a small crowd around him.” People on the scene said the man was asth- matic, with his inhaler on the ground nearby.
“We weren’t getting any vitals,” Cloherty said, which prompted the start of chest compressions and CPR.
Sikorski added, “In a moment like that...it’s second na- ture; you just react. You do what you got to do. You revert to your training.”
Their quick actions kept the man going until Chicago Fire Department paramedics arrived and took him to an area hospital where he was treated and, ultimately, recov- ered.
“He looked like a different person,” Martinez said of see- ing the man the next day at the hospital. “People think all we do is make arrests, and we do that, but we want to help people as well. It feels (really) good.” d
