“His thing was appearance commands respect, so he was impeccable from head to toe,” disclosed Officer The- odore Anderson, who worked second watch with New- man the past 12 years. “He was an inspector’s nightmare. You could never gig him for his uniform, his pants, not even his moustache.”
Newman worked briefly for the fugitive apprehension unit but spent most of his time on the beat. He received 137 awards, including two department commendations. A father of two, his wife also worked as a civilian employ- ee in Department’s Office of Community Policing.
Anderson marveled at how Newman would talk to his son, Purdue University basketball player Brandon New- man every day. Brandon, who played for Valparaiso High School, finished second in the 2019 Indiana Mr. Basket- ball voting.
During his 20 years on, all those in the 4th District learned how the job just came naturally to Newman. Gar- za saw that when they worked together when Newman first came on.
“He just went and did it. He was not big on explanations of how and why, so this was a guy you couldn’t cast asper- sions on,” he continued. “When we go to work, all we can ask for is a good eight hours. Sometimes, it’s a rough eight hours. Sometimes, it’s an irritating eight hours. Working with Ron Newman, you knew the day would go well.”
Anderson also praised how Newman was a great teach- er to young officers. But he did so quietly. He did so by example. He would show them constant acts of kindness like rolling up to a bus stop on a cold winter day or a hot summer day, seeing citizens in need and requesting per-
