Members Only leading the COVID-19 response We’re in this together

A gift with the name “smile kit” is sure to evoke just that – a stretch of delight across the face that radiates joy. When officers in the 18th District received their kits on April 14, protective masks concealed their grins – but coverings couldn’t hide the excitement they felt receiving such a gen- erous gift.
“It’s wonderful,” Sergeant Chris Schenk gushed. “I don’t have the words to express my gratitude.”
Mia Banks, a student at Chicago High School, packed up brown pa- per bags with N-95 masks, hand sanitizer and bottles of vitamin C sports drinks as part of her “Stay Safe and Smile Campaign,” which aims to help officers and others stay protected while battling COVID-19 on the front lines.
Banks got in contact with the district through community partners, which Schenk says speaks to the value of close ties during these tough times.
“We have very strong partnerships in the 18th District,” he affirmed. “We’re coming together as a family, united. This family extends out as a partnership, coming together and working together by looking out for each other.”
The “smile kits” were an incredible gesture, and the 18th District has been working tirelessly to return the favors of its community members by frequently reaching out to offer support. Right now, officers are making calls to ensure all seniors are looked out for, along with wellbeing checks.
“We’re trying to make sure everyone is safe in this time,” Schenk men- tioned. “With social distancing and education, we’re addressing personal safety concerns to make sure everyone’s okay.”
And the sergeant’s message to members during the era of COVID-19, one of caring for the community and being gracious enough to accept support, can be wrapped up in one succinct statement – or, rather, com- mand: “Stay strong.”
