The Gift of H orses
The Horses of Honor stand as life-size, artistic tributes to Chicago Police Officers killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty. If you have a chance, hit the CPMF website and view the Horses of Honor gallery to check out these statues that can be seen everywhere in the City from Gi- no’s East to Harry Caray’s to Hawthorne Race Track to the
corner of Michigan and Ohio to the foyer of Lodge 7.
In August 2014, the Foundation began Horses of Honor, and since then more than 100 have been created and the work has raised nearly $200,000 for police-related charities. Each Horse of Honor is designed and painted by a lo- cal artist and is personally dedicated to
a police officer who has been killed.
The horse in the Lodge front hall pays tribute to the history of the Chicago and Na- tional FOPs. And it also evokes what makes this
program truly special.
The horse is dedicated to Officer Larry J. Vincent, who
was killed in a gun battle with two burglary suspects on Jan. 14, 1983. He was 26, three years on the job, and left behind a wife pregnant with their son, Anthony. His best
friend from the academy also had a pregnant wife at the time. Both their sons grew up to be Chicago police officers. Larry Vincent’s best friend was Lodge 7 President Dean An- gelo, Sr.
The Gift of C ontinuing Life
Part of Cline’s vision for the Memo-
rial includes each generation of of-
ficers putting its mark on the park.
An indelible moment came in 2010
when a bronze, bas-relief and steel
statue honoring Chicago Police Of-
ficers catastrophically injured in the
line of duty was unveiled during the An-
nual Candlelight Vigil. At the same time, the Foundation committed to providing education and many of the same benefits given to families of fallen officers to those who are catastrophically injured.
“We are honored to do it and let those families know that their officers are heroes, too,” Cline adds.
The Gift of Financial A ssistance
In October 2016, the CPMF provided financial assistance to two officers who were injured on duty, two disabled of- ficers, the CPD Honor Guard and Officer-Involved Shoot- ing Classes. The Foundation also paid the health insurance premium for an officer who was catastrophically injured. All in October 2016.
