“Beyond the mission of the park, the Foundation recog- nizes the needs of families both financially and emotion- ally,” Hannus endorses. “We’re always looking for ways to help the families.”
The Foundation has also been known to provide assis- tance for officers with children who are seriously ill, fam- ilies of officers who pass away not in the line of duty, the CPD Survivors Group and help out an officer in dire need of medical treatment. As Hannus asserts, “The first thing to know is that we are here entirely for them.”
The Gift of O ther A ssistance
The CPMF charters a bus and transports uniformed Chi- cago Police Officers to the Illinois Prisoner Review Board in Springfield each time a cop killer’s hearing is held. The Foundation also sponsors the Chicago Cop Shot Program to provide a $20,000 reward to anyone who provides in- formation to the Chicago Police that leads to the arrest and conviction of any person who shoots or shoots at a Chicago Police Officer. And that is on top of such fundrais- ing events as its annual Rock the Badges in August, Run to Remember in May, Ride to Remember in July and Golf Outing in August.
The Gift of The B rotherhood
For all the other gifts, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation was, and always will be, built on the generos- ity of Chicago Police Officers. Cline discloses that the first
inkling of inspiration for what the Foun- dation could be came from all those times he saw members of a unit chip
in when one of their ranks had a sick child or some other similar need. Be- cause of that, the first rule of order he conceived was ensuring that every dollar collected goes to help an offi-
cer in need.
“It starts with the support of Chicago
Police officers,” says Hannus, who was one
of those CPD Officers supporting and contributing for 14 years before moving on to found the renowned security company American Heritage. He personifies the drive within Chicago coppers to always look after their own; he hires retired Department officers to work for his company and is a prominent benefactor for the Foundation.
And that seems to remind how the gift of giving runs strong through this organization and all the police officers and families it touches. It’s a feeling, perhaps, that only Chicago Police Officers understand. And deserve.
“I never knew what the brotherhood and the blue family meant,” Nauden articulates. “Now, I understand how they support each other and why my husband supported so many different funds. I can’t even begin to explain what the support means to us now. There are no words to say it.”d
