On Sept. 26, 2020, a 17-year-old victim related that while at- tempting to jump the fence at Lane Tech High School at 3400 N. Western Ave., he fell onto the wrought-iron fence, impal- ing his left forearm. He sustained a puncture wound, severing an artery, and he was bleeding profusely. Beat 1971 Officers Raul Cerda Jr. and Jake Boettcher responded to the scene and applied a tourniquet which proved successful in stopping the bleeding, saving the victim’s arm and his life.
The victim was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital by Chicago Fire Department Ambulance 61, where he was treat- ed by Dr. Rico, who stated that the victim was in stable con- dition.

On Jan. 5, 2020, officers from Beat 42168 heard the radio transmission of shots fired at 75th and Stewart and respond- ed, along with Unit 613.
Upon arrival, Officer William Grossklas observed one victim lying on his side with what appeared to be a non-life-threat- ening gunshot wound. He then observed a second victim lying on his right side in obvious pain and distress. After re- moving multiple layers of the second victim’s clothing, Offi-
cers Grossklas and Urbanek found that the victim had two gunshot wounds, both actively bleeding, and one also caus- ing an open fracture in his leg. The officers applied a trauma bandage to the victim’s back and a tourniquet to his leg until bleeding ceased. Treatment continued until CFD Fire/EMS arrived on scene and took over the victim’s care.
