On June 3, 2020, explosives technicians Frank Gaber and Eduardo Vasquez responded to 11436 S. Champlain, follow- ing a district response of “Info for the Police” that led to the discovery of an unexploded IED. On arrival, explosives techs observed sitting in plain view on the front steps multiple in- cendiary objects wrapped in green tape. ET Gaber carefully approached the unexploded IED and determined that the granual prills contained therein were ammonium nitrate. A strong odor of diesel fuel was also present.
Minutes later Cotter and Wynn, as well as CPD Bomb Squad Commander James Egan, arrived on scene to assist with the IED. It was subsequently relocated to the sidewalk and, through the use of robots, was completely separated. All the components containing the explosive ANFO were emptied. The remote separation and emptying of the explosive compound were successful in rendering safe the unexploded IED, preventing

damage to
property or
loss of life.
The entire
time, from
the begin-
ning to
the point
where the
IED was rendered safe, all explosives techs were in the “kill zone.”
