the park drinking alcohol and acting strangely while watching young girls playing nearby.
Rivera, Benitez and Herrera approached the man to attempt a conversation, but the man refused to put down the cell phone on which he was talking. He then became angry and combative toward the offi- cers. When Benitez repeated his order for the man to put down his phone, the suspect quickly pulled out a gun and pointed in the direction of the officers before firing a shot at Benitez. The officers returned fire to end the threat.
Once the scene had been secured, Rivera returned to assist Benitez by giving him his belt, which Beni- tez used as a makeshift tourniquet. Rivera also ap- plied pressure to the wound, which helped to slow the bleeding. Additional officers arrived on scene to place a tourniquet from a medical kit on Benitez, but decided not to wait for paramedics to show up.
They placed Benitez into a police vehicle and drove him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Tirado rode with Benitez, keeping him alert and awake, while also advising dispatchers of their route to the hospital.
Benitez was eventually treated and released, and has fully recovered. He will be joining the CPMF char- ity team to run in the 2017 Chicago Marathon. d
