On Sept. 21, 2019, at approximately 8:42 a.m., Officers Adam Wazny and Michaela Touhy, as well as other members of the Fu- gitive Apprehension Unit/U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force, arrived at 1934 W. 65th St. to attempt the arrest of an of- fender wanted for aggravated battery with a handgun, which had occurred on Sept. 18, 2019.
Officers Wazny and Touhy encountered the offender as he at- tempted to leave the rear of the residence. The offender produced a handgun from his waistband and began shooting at Officers Wazny and Touhy, striking Officer Wazny multiple times and crit- ically injuring him.
The officers engaged in a gun battle with the offender, who continued firing upon them. Officer Wazny, while shot, engaged the offender in a second gun battle, causing the offender to flee the scene on foot. Officer Wazny suffered gunshot wounds to his upper left leg and groin area, which caused extensive blood loss. While injured, Officer Wazny applied his own tourniquet to his leg until the other officers assisted and applied a second tourniquet and performed lifesaving measures to control the bleeding.
The responding officers provided cover and security as the team of officers placed Officer Wazny into Sergeant Rayl’s vehicle. Officer Wazny was transported to Christ Hospital, where he was treated by the trauma staff and taken into surgery. The hospital staff noted that if not for the heroic actions of all involved, Officer Wazny may not have survived. All nominated officers contributed to Officer Wazny surviving this deadly encounter.
It is with great appreciation that Chicago Lodge 7 presents the officers with the Life Saving Award.
