Meeting the challenges of police marriages
The police family experiences challenges in their marriages particular to this vocation. There- fore, active and retired CPD members are invited to attend the Superintendent’s Speaker Series ad- dressing this issue. Facilitated by Chaplain Kim- berly Lewis-Davis and a panel of police couples (including LEOs married to other LEOs and those married to civilians), the presentation is ti- tled, “Strengthening Marriages and Navi- gating the Complexities of Law-Enforce-
ment Marriages.” We will address items unique to these couples and share successes and pitfalls.
The presentation will be held on Monday, Feb. 24
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at
CPD headquarters. There is no charge. To register, please contact Chief Barbara West at barbara.west@chicagopolice. org. For more information, contact Chaplain Kimberly Lew- is-Davis at kimberly.lewisdavis@chicagopolice.org or call 312-771-6638.
In the event your marriage lacks the spark it once had, I’d like to share with you one more marriage resource, offered by the Catholic Church(see below):
On recent rounds throughout the districts, we renewed our passports and ventured to 004, where I ran into Officer Tim An- dersen, keeping crime at bay on the Southeast Side. Keep up the great work, Tim and the South Chica- go gang!
Ash Wednesday is Feb. 26. In keeping with time-honored tradition, CPD chaplains will distrib- ute blessed ashes at various locations throughout the ity. The schedule will be posted in the daily bulletin
and on our website.
Finally, this month on Feb. 13 we marked the two-year anni- versary of Com- mander Paul Bau- er’s murder. As I stated clearly at his funeral Mass
(and since), Paul’s life wasn’t “given,” as so many outlets stat- ed. It was taken. It was stolen from his family and from us by a four-time convicted felon who should have never been on the street. This lenient penal system should be remembered as we head to the polling booths very soon.
The name of Paul’s murderer has already been forgotten by many. But Paul Bauer’s name and legacy, along with his wife Erin and daughter Grace, will always be remembered.
Memorial cards from Paul’s funeral (and many of our LOD funerals) are available for download from our website (chica- gopcm.org). If you’d like one mailed to you, just let me know; my contact info is below.
Thank you for doing (or having done) God’s work!

dles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” Make it your mission for today to bring a smile to a soul in need; you’ll both have a better day.
Last but not least, remember that the world is made up of givers and takers. Takers eat better, but givers sleep better. Thanks to all of you for being givers, and when you get home after your shift, enjoy your sleep.
On behalf of all the chaplains, may G-d bless you and keep you safe.

hope you feel better soon.” Never pass up an opportunity to help someone carry their burden. We all have our daily strug- gles, some larger than others. Say a prayer for them and thank G-d that your struggles are not as big.
9. Recently, while traveling in Kenya, we met a refugee from Zimbabwe. He said he hadn’t eaten anything in over three days and looked extremely skinny and unhealthy. Then my friend offered him the rest of the sandwich he was eating. The first thing the man said was, “We can share it.” A meal shared is the tastiest in the world, for both.
10. Remember we can all make a difference in the world that we live in just by sharing a kindness. “Thousands of can-
