injuries. Both
vehicles were
locked togeth-
er amid their
crumpled steel, and one of these vehicles began to smolder with the driver still pinned inside. The officers secured the pe- rimeter, notified CFD EMS and immediately began to attend to the victims. Sergeant Slater climbed through the smol- dering vehicle’s rear door and secured the pinned victim’s C-spine, immobilizing her neck to prevent injury.

The officers alerted the sergeant that the fire was beginning to envelop the vehicle and EMS had still not arrived. The offi- cers, fearing for the sergeant and driver’s safety, were able to physically pry open the front door of the mangled wreckage and remove the victim without exacerbating her injuries. EMS finally arrived on scene and transported the victim to North- western Hospital, and CFD extinguished the fire.
The other driver was cited with numerous traffic citations for causing the accident and having no driver’s license and no insurance.
It is with great appreciation that Chicago Lodge #7 pres- ents Sergeant Slater and Officers Diana, Kudzia and Caro with the Life Saving Award.
