On Sep. 15, 2020, at the location of 1130 S. Michigan Ave., Officers Cama- cho and Alvarez responded to a hit-and- run accident in which a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The victim had suffered a compound fracture, and her femur bone was pro- truding from her leg, causing severe blood loss.
Citizens on scene had already at- tempted to assist the victim with a makeshift tourniquet, but the victim’s condition continued to decline. The of- ficers assessed the victim’s injuries and immediately utilized their first aid and LEMART training, removing the ill-fash- ioned tourniquet the citizens were us- ing and placing their department-is- sued tourniquet on the victim to control the bleeding.
The officers comforted the victim and
stayed with her until CFD EMS finally arrived. Once the victim was removed from the scene, the officers canvassed for witnesses who would provide the in- formation necessary for MAIU to arrest the offender and charge them accord- ingly.
It is with great appreciation that Chicago Lodge #7 presents Officers Camacho and Alvarez with the Life Saving Award.
