On June 18, 2020, at the location of 358 E. Jackson Blvd., Officer Schaefer and Officer Swanson were approached by three frantic citizens in an SUV. The driver related that one of his passengers was shot while traveling southbound on Lake Shore Drive.
The officers used their LEMART train-
ing and assessed the victim’s injury and applied a tourniquet above the victim’s severely bleeding wound. The officers notified EMS and called for assisting units to secure the scene and witness- es, all the while continuing to keep the victim calm and conscious. EMS finally arrived on scene and transported the
victim to Northwestern Hospital, where the emergency room staff recognized the officers’ actions and attributed the victim’s survival to them.
It is with great appreciation that Chicago Lodge #7 presents Officers Schaefer and Swanson with the Life Saving Award.
