On Oct. 9, 2020, at the location of 1637 W. 100th St., Officers Wagner and Rosciani responded to a call of an alarm. Once on scene, the officers were greeted by the eager caller, who accom- panied the officers to his neighbor’s apartment. The officers were able to hear the alarm’s constant ringing from an open window.
The officers ascertained that it was either a smoke detector or carbon mon- oxide detector sounding the alarm. The officers knocked at the door to no avail, but upon peering inside the windows, observed a female victim lying curled up on the floor. The officers gained en- try and immediately carried the female victim to safety. The officers requested EMS and located a second male victim lying in a pool of vomit. The officers cleared the male victim’s airway and were able to rouse him from his carbon monoxide–induced slumber, escorting him safely from the apartment.
CFD EMS finally arrived on scene and transported both victims to a nearby hospital, where they were admitted. The victims’ faulty stove pipes were found to be the cause of their brush with death.
