 Department pauses to remember Bauer
Two years after Commander Paul Bauer’s tragic line-of-duty death, Chicago Police Officers remain steadfast in their commit- ment to never forget him.
On Feb. 13, the department paused just before 2 p.m. with an all- call across police radio in tribute to Bauer’s final moments protect- ing the city. Officers, Bauer’s wife and daughter and many others gathered outside the 18th District headquarters to once again pay tribute to a man defined by his selfless nature and dedication to serving his community in ways beyond the badge he wore.
With snow flurries falling from the sky, the ceremony centered on celebrating Bauer’s life and contemplating what he meant to the people who honored him by attending the event.
The ceremony also highlighted his lasting legacy in the form of the Paul Bauer Fitness Center, located at district headquarters, which was funded by community members in the 18th District.

Get Behind the Vest
Within a few days of 2,200 Chicago Police Officers getting fit- ted for new bulletproof vests, Alderman Matt O’Shea’s Get Behind the Vest Pancake Breakfast continued the effort to raise money for equipment to keep officers safe.
Held at St. John Fisher School in O’Shea’s 19th Ward, the sixth an- nual event included officers, their families and community mem- bers packing the tables to help support the Chicago Police Memo- rial Foundation and its ongoing efforts to ensure that every officer has a new vest to protect them on the streets.
A Get Behind the Vest hockey fundraiser is scheduled for March 28, when members of the St. Rita High School hockey team will take on the FOP Stars squad at the Southwest Ice Arena.
