CANDLE HOLDER AND CANDLE
BOOK STEP 1
STEP 2
Candle: Basecoat with a mix of Dark Chocolate+Bleached Sand+Orange Twist (approx. 2:1:1/2). Using smaller dry brush, pick up base-mix, take out excess, pick up Bleached Sand, take out excess, and add highlight to left front; repeat, picking up more Bleached Sand in dirty brush as necessary. Float highlights, using same colors, along top edges of candle. Shade inside top, bottom, and on both sides with Dark Chocolate. Add more Dark Chocolate to right side and bottom. Lightly float a little highlight color over shadow on left. Wick is Grey Storm. While still wet, add a touch of Bleached Sand to tip for highlight. Candle Holder: Basecoat Slate Grey. Highlight pan area on left, a little on right, left and right
of socket (where the candle sits), top edge of socket with Grey Sky, reinforce, adding Bleached Sand to dirty brush; reinforce
on left only with more Bleached Sand in dirty brush. Shade next to cut edges of socket, at bottom of top “lip” on socket, on left and right edges, next to socket with Neutral Grey; reinforce
with Grey Storm in dirty brush. Add more Grey Storm shading
to darkest areas. Add Black Green with liner brushalong edge of pan. Dampen candle holder with water and add final highlights to socket, right under highlight on candle, and a few on Black Green area with Titanium White.
GLASSES
Basecoat rims, temples (parts that go over ears), hinges, and bridge with Slate Grey. Highlight with Grey Sky; reinforce by adding Bleached Sand to dirty brush; add more Bleached Sand to brightest areas. Shade with Neutral Grey; reinforce with Storm Grey in dirty brush. Add more Storm Grey to darkest areas. Note: Use liner brush on rims and shaders on other areas. Lenses are a wash of Bleached Sand. Dampen areas with brightest highlights with water and add highlights with tip of liner brush and Titanium White.
LETTERING
Line in with a brush-mix of Grey Storm+Evergreen (approx. 2:1). BOTTOM OF BOX
Add masking tape to entire bottom of box, ripping in various lengths, etc. Basecoat with Camel. Put denatured alcohol in spritzer bottle. Test bottle to be sure spray works. Make a wash of Raw Sienna, using sponge brush, and apply to one side of box. While still wet, spritz with alcohol. The alcohol will make the paint “move.” Dry thoroughly before moving to next side. When dry, repeat process with thin Traditional Burnt Sienna; repeat, using Traditional Burnt Umber.
FINISHING
Add tints of colors to each element on lid: a little Burnt Orange and Heritage Brick at bottom of wine bottle, on glasses near book, on candle holder and candle near book, and on mug next to book; a little Sap Green on mug next to bottle and table, on glasses
near table, on candle holder near wine bottle, on book near table. Varnish with your favorite DecoArt Varnish.
