• Box with hinged lid (No. 20-11503) is available at www.vikingwoodcrafts.com.
This high realism poppy is much easier to paint than you’d imagine. The simple use of dark and medium cast shadows adds a dramatic interest to this textured poppy on a smooth background.
I salvaged an old jewelry box for this project, but of course you could adapt this to fit just about any surface.
PREPARATION
Remove the hinges from the box, sand the surfaces well and remove the excess dust. Apply a coat of DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer and when completely dry, sand again to remove the raised fibers in the wood and wipe off the dust.
Have a puddle of Lamp Black and a puddle of Russet on your palette. Using the 3⁄4" flat wash brush, generously pick up the Lamp Black and blend it on your palette and then load one corner of the brush into Russet, blending just a little and then slip-slap the paint over the top of the lid. Re-load as needed adding more Russet than Lamp Black as you make your way down the lower part of the lid. Your lid should now be completely basecoated and opaque. Don’t be concerned about brush marks. Basecoat the sides and interior of the box with Lamp Black.
When dry, use the 3⁄4" flat wash brush to moisten the bottom right-hand corner of the lid with a bit of clean water. While wet, using the same brush, slip-slap some Plantation Pine in the area then quickly use your fingers to push the paint around to soften it. Use small circular movements. When the paint feels like it’s beginning to
dry under your fingers, stop. Repeat with Hauser Medium Green. When dry, use the #4 domed round brush to dry- brush Cadmium Orange under the poppy, letting the paint fade out to the left and a bit to the right.
